What I didn't appreciate until I re-watched some (many) episodes recently was how much impact he had on me as a performer.
I didn't have access to a video recorder until quite late in the shows run, so I would only have ever seen each show once.
Yet if I think back to the material I did when I started out performing as a magician (aged 12 or something) so much of the structure of what I was performing - and in some cases many of the jokes - are lifted straight from routines he performed on his show.
I used to perform linking rings almost exactly as he performed it, yet at the time there is no way I could have watched the routine more than once.
I don't remember ever setting out with intention to copy that routine, but there must have been something special in the performance for that 10 minute segment to have imprinted itself that heavily on me.
