Greetings, I can shine a bit of light in this as I was speaking to an agent about this issue only last week.
The reason that some agents do this is so that bookers don't just use their websites as a "shopping list" to view acts and then contact them directly to book them rather than booking them through the agency. As a performer I don't really have an issue with practice as I can see the agents point of view. The only issue I have is when the agent decide on a poor name for your act that does not reflect what you do in the slightest.....The agent I was speaking to last week wanted to put me on their site as "Dave the Juggler" I subtlety turned them down!!!!
Kind regards
Ian
