Thanks for the insight Ian. I guess it's a product of the internet age - websites and email make it a lot easier for bookers to make direct contact with artists than it used to be - I guess the agents are trying to hold onto their turf. (How absurd that he wanted to give you a crappy name anyway!)
I still feel the performer loses out - one less opportunity to establish one's individual 'brand' in the bookers' minds, and a step back to the perception that all jugglers (for example) are more-or-less interchangeable.
